Squarehead, a leading Norwegian developer of advanced acoustic sensor systems, has joined the Ocean Autonomy Cluster. With cutting-edge capabilities in AI driven acoustic anomaly detection, directional sound technology, and integrated camera solutions, the company brings new perspectives to situational awareness and asset management within the maritime and autonomous sectors.
Squarehead’s solutions are widely used in drone detection, maritime operations, security, and industrial monitoring. Their technology enables precise localization of sound sources, early detection of anomalies, and enhanced acoustic situational awareness — capabilities that are increasingly important as the maritime industry moves toward higher levels of autonomy.
Peter Brønlund, Business Development Director
“Through our acoustic solutions, we see a clear opportunity to add value to the autonomy ecosystem,” says Peter Brønlund, Business Development Director at Squarehead. “Directional sound detection and integrated visual monitoring can strengthen decision-making, safety, and operational oversight in emerging autonomous applications.”
The company recently signed a contract with Fjord1 to deliver an AI driven acoustic anomaly detection system for asset management and predictive maintenance — an example of the innovation Squarehead aims to contribute to the broader industry.

Squarehead has around 70 employees and an annual turnover of approximately NOK 130 million. A developing part of the organisation is currently dedicated to industrial and autonomy-related markets, which remain early-stage commercial areas for the company. These new initiatives build on Squarehead’s long-standing expertise in dual-use acoustic technology and its ongoing adaptation to meet emerging needs in industrial and autonomous systems.
“Although we are a relatively large company in terms of total activity, our industrial and autonomy-focused team is still in an early stage of its development,” Brønlund explains. “This is a new and emerging market for us, but we strongly believe we can contribute to the cluster and gain significant value by being part of it.”
He adds that joining OAC is an important strategic step as Squarehead accelerates its efforts within autonomy and maritime innovation.
