Read article in Norwegian How do you succeed with exporting technology to demanding markets like the EU and the US? That was the main topic when FI Ocean Space Incubator and FI Næringshage hosted a dedicated export-themed event at HAVET in Trondheim, in collaboration with Deksa and Innovation Norway. The event gathered a range of technology companies with ambitions for international growth. Among the participants were companies such as Eelume, Clean Sea Solutions, Autoagri, F&Z Solutions, HH Environmental Solutions, Maritime Robotics, WaterLinked, Zeabuz, Optonor, and Poseidon. During four intensive hours, participants received a comprehensive introduction to topics ranging from free trade agreements and customs regulations to export control and the classification of so-called dual-use technologies. “For many early-stage and scaling companies, export can seem both risky and confusing. Our goal was to provide clarity, confidence, and practical tools before companies enter new markets,” said Vegard Saur, head of FI Ocean Space Incubator. Caspar Fabini, Innovation Norway. Fabini, an export advisor specializing in logistics, customs, VAT, free trade, and rules of origin, gave participants a detailed look into how international trade agreements and regulations affect market access and how tools such as the Mendel tariff database can help avoid common mistakes. Thorngren, a legal export advisor with expertise in international contracts and e-commerce, addressed the legal aspects of export. She emphasized the importance of sound contracts, risk management, and what companies should be especially mindful of when navigating foreign market requirements. Malin Thorngren, Innovation Norway. He explained how companies must relate to dual-use classifications and license requirements — and how security assessments can determine whether an export is legal or not. This topic sparked strong engagement, with many attendees saying this part of the program provided valuable new insights. From regulation to implementation The day concluded with a Q&A session and open discussion, where participants shared their own experiences and export-related challenges. Many highlighted a significantly improved understanding of Incoterms and VAT rules within the EU, and said they now feel better prepared for entering export markets. Håkon Sommerset, Deksa. Participants were introduced to the cluster’s service offerings and current efforts to secure funding under the national cluster program. Experiences were also shared from companies that have taken part in XLRTR — a business development initiative focusing on dual-use technologies — along with a preview of the new cohort launching this autumn. The ESA BIC program was also highlighted, with input from companies receiving financial support and business development assistance through the scheme. The next application deadline is 1 September. Participants also got to meet the new director of Maritimt Forum, Ellen Weidemann, who presented the organization's strategic priorities going forward. The event concluded by welcoming new member companies to the network. “We hope this day has given our member companies both knowledge and confidence to take their products from our region to the world,” said Kine Kilen, manager of FI Næringshage.
