Blueye launches next-generation ROV platform X7. Photo: Blueye Robotics Expanding underwater autonomy stack The new Blueye X7 and Blueye X3 Ultra represent two complementary tiers in Blueye’s next-generation underwater portfolio, combining increased operational capability with expanded onboard AI and improved imaging performance. The Blueye X7 is designed for complex underwater missions that demand high stability, precision, and modular payload integration. With seven thrusters enabling full six degrees of freedom and seven guest ports for sensors and tools, it is built for demanding operations such as inspection, search and recovery, aquaculture, and port infrastructure monitoring. The system also introduces onboard AI processing for real-time object recognition, tracking, and turbidity filtering directly on the 4K camera feed, with support for deploying custom AI models on the vehicle. Alongside it, the Blueye X3 Ultra brings upgraded capability to the compact inspection segment. It builds on Blueye’s established fast-deployment platform with improved 4K HDR imaging, enhanced positioning, and increased onboard compute power via NVIDIA Jetson Orin NX. This enables real-time image enhancement as well as AI-driven functions such as object detection and tracking. With three guest ports, the X3 Ultra maintains strong modularity while remaining optimized for rapid deployment and broad inspection use cases. The Blueye X3 Ultra ready for dive. Image: Blueye Robotics Blueye Cloud: unified data and fleet management Blueye Cloud provides a browser-based platform for managing ROV fleets, missions, and inspection data. Users can replay dives with depth tracks, sonar overlays, and synchronized media, and share results via simple links without additional software. The platform also introduces project-based reporting with optional AI-assisted draft generation, linking insights directly back to mission data and annotations. Replay any dive on the map, depth-coloured track, time-synced media, and multibeam playback, all in the browser. Integrated subsea ecosystem All systems run on Blueye’s shared software architecture, enabling synchronized updates and consistent functionality across the fleet. Combined with Blueye Cloud, the platform creates an end-to-end workflow from deployment to analysis and reporting. The launch strengthens the shift toward integrated subsea autonomy, where smaller teams can execute increasingly advanced underwater operations with less complexity and faster data handling. Blueye Robotics Blueye Robotics develops user-friendly underwater drones and robotic systems for inspection, monitoring, and operational tasks across maritime industries. The company combines compact ROV platforms, onboard AI, and cloud-based data infrastructure to simplify underwater operations and improve access to subsea data and situational awareness. "articleBody" : "ACUA Ocean has been awarded a European Space Agency (ESA) contract, supported by the UK Space Agency, to advance their “nested robotic” system for subsea inspection, deployed from USV PIONEER. The project will accelerate ACUA’s development of Pioneer-class autonomous USV capabilities to launch and recover (LAR) remotely operated subsea vehicles (ROVs). This “nested robotics” (robot-deploying-robot) solution will expand the capabilities of uncrewed solutions for the offshore energy and subsea inspection industries. “This contract marks a significant milestone for ACUA Ocean,” said Neil Tinmouth, CEO at ACUA Ocean. “By combining subsea robotics with ACUA’s inherently stable uncrewed surface vehicle, with global, satellite-enabled control, we can provide safer, cleaner, and more cost-effective access to subsea inspection across multiple sectors.” The system will use multiple satcoms solutions along with GNSS, allowing for Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) remote control, data transfer and positioning of the vessel, and subsequent remote operation of the tethered ROV. The bonding of networks will also allow the USV to utilise the bandwidth of all available connections together rather than switching, preserving C2 links even in the event of primary network degradation. These space-enabled technologies will allow PIONEER to deliver enhanced robotic services for offshore wind inspection, subsea cable maintenance, defense reconnaissance, and ocean science. The announcement of the contract comes after the recent announcement that the UK Space Agency is to join the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology by April 2026, helping to streamline support for the UK’s growing space industry. The changes will bring together the people who shape space policy and those who deliver it, cutting duplication, reducing bureaucracy and delivering greater impact for the UK space community and SMEs. Dr Shuxiu Zhang, Head of Space Applications and Data at the UK Space Agency said: “This project demonstrates how space-enabled technologies, such as satellite communications and GNSS, can transform maritime operations and deliver cross-sector impact. By supporting ACUA Ocean’s nested robotics system, we’re advancing high-impact applications that enhance safety, reduce emissions, and reinforce UK leadership in autonomous systems across maritime and aerospace. It reflects the Space Industrial Plan’s shift towards commercially driven innovation, where space capabilities catalyse growth, resilience, and national advantage beyond the space sector.” The contract follows PIONEER’s recent certification under the UK Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s Workboat Code Edition 3 Annex 2, a world-first approval for a remotely operated vessel. The new contract will accelerate commercial deployment of nested robotic systems and strengthen ACUA Ocean’s offering as a global leader in maritime autonomy. About ACUA Ocean Founded by Neil and Mike Tinmouth in 2021, ACUA Ocean is a UK-based scaleup designing and developing unmanned surface vessels (USVs) for ocean monitoring and data collection. ACUA’s autonomous systems deliver enhanced full ocean capabilities for the launch and recovery of sensor and system payloads. AQUA Ocean is member of Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Missing on the picture: Martin Ludvigsen, Celil Yilmaz, Mahmoud Hussein Abdelrazik Hassan,Elena Marie Kirchman In a new project led by PhD candidate Leonard Florian Tom Günzel at NTNU’s Department of Marine Technology, the team is taking the first steps toward making Blueye Robotics’ popular mini-ROV fully autonomous. The goal is to cut the tether – literally – and enable the vehicle to operate independently from a docking station on the seafloor for weeks at a time. “We’re working to turn Blueye into an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that can reside on the seafloor for extended periods,” says Günzel. “After months of simulations and pool testing, we’ve now completed our first field deployment in the Trondheim Fjord – with great success.” Infrastructure and navigation for resident operations Together with PhD colleagues Ambjørn Waldum and Gabriele Kasparaviciute and a team of eight master's students, the project team has developed both the vehicle and the infrastructure needed to support long-term autonomous missions. The AUV is designed to navigate distances of 100–500 meters back to a docking station located on the seabed. To find its way, it uses an Ultra-short baseline (USBL) transducer that sends signals to a modem on the AUV. The modem pings back and receives its position in return, enabling precise real-time navigation. As the AUV approaches the station, it can either pause in front of an optical modem for communication or proceed directly to dock. The station provides inductive charging and high-bandwidth data transfer. This enables operators to update mission parameters, retrieve sensor data, and issue new instructions – all without the AUV having to surface. In effect, this allows the vehicle to become a resident AUV, operating continuously from a fixed subsea base without human intervention between missions. The recent deployment was carried out in collaboration with NTNU’s larger ROV, Minerva, and marks a major step forward for compact subsea vehicles. The project is part of the broader SAFEGUARD initiative and builds on years of research and development at NTNU, where also NTNU VISTA Centre for Autonomous Robotic Operations Subsea - CAROS has been an important infrastructure provider. A technological milestone “I’m incredibly thankful for everyone who contributed – through master’s theses, technical work, and ongoing support. And of course to Martin Ludvigsen, who laid much of the foundation for what we’re building on today,” says Günzel. About Blueye Robotics Founded in 2015 as a spin-off from NTNU, Blueye Robotics has grown into a leading provider of user-friendly underwater drones. Their underwater drones are used worldwide for research, inspection, and education. With a mission to make the ocean more accessible, Blueye combines robust engineering with intuitive design. The autonomy project builds on the flexibility of the existing platform and demonstrates its potential for more advanced, independent operations. Blueye is a member of both the Ocean Autonomy Cluster and the NORDSEC Defence and Security Cluster, showing how technology developed for civilian use can also support defense applications and critical infrastructure monitoring.
