"articleBody" : "At the member meeting of the Ocean Autonomy Cluster MIDSEC, analyst Per Marius Frost-Nielsen and business liaison Terje Lunde from the Police Security Service (PST) informed about their work and the various threats against Norwegian and Trøndelag-based businesses. The altered security situation has led to an increase in the threat level. It's important for companies to assess their own vulnerability and what measures they need to implement to protect their assets, says Frost-Nielsen. He recommends companies to be both vigilant and proactive. The most important security work is what the companies themselves must do. Many businesses possess assets, knowledge, and information that are of great interest to foreign states, and PST gladly invites companies to a dialogue about the security situation. Senior Adviser Martin Blom from the Ministry of Defence informed about the long-term plan for the Defence, and what the significant investments that are forthcoming could entail in terms of opportunities for the business sector. The meeting was conducted in collaboration with MIDSEC Defence and Security Cluster. Analyst Per Marius Frost-Nielsen, PST. "articleBody" : "Autonomy will be a key contributor to decarbonization and zero-emission vessels. We are proud to be part of this large and important group, says Frode Halvorsen, manager of Ocean Autonomy Cluster. The European Space Agency (ESA) has officially launched its Maritime Sustainability Task Force. ESA's Maritime Sustainability Task Force was officially launched at EUROMARITIME in Marseille last week, where several members of the new collaboration joined ESA representatives at the event. Initiated by ESA’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) programme, the new Task Force will see ESA working together with a number of major players in the sector, including shipping companies, maritime authorities, classification societies, and industry associations. Together they will work to leverage on space solutions to reduce the environmental impact of the maritime sector. The global maritime industry is responsible for 95% of global trade by volume and is undergoing a paradigm shift as it seeks to mitigate its impact on the environment. The transformation, driven by economic, social, and regulatory pressures, will be a decades-long effort but has the potential to revolutionise the impact that the maritime industry has on the environment. Space is poised to play a vital role in this transformation, having the global coverage to connect the oceans, and the capability to generate actionable information which will underpin the green transition of the maritime sector. Supported by its Member States and partners across Europe, ESA has initiated the Maritime Sustainability Task Force as a means of identifying and agreeing on short- and long-term priority areas and fostering the adoption of space-based solutions on a wide scale, thus maximising their impact. This will include initiatives that will alleviate the impact of greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution, water pollution, noise pollution, and the spread of non-indigenous species. Speaking at the launch in Marseille, Nick Appleyard, Head of Applications and Solutions at ESA, said “We are delighted to launch the Maritime Sustainability Task Force today, marking the culmination of many months of work and the start of an important move forward in reducing the environmental impact of the maritime sector.” The Task Force comprises representatives from across the maritime sector and continues to expand. The founding members comprise maritime authorities, including the European Maritime Safety Agency (EMSA), classification societies, such as Norwegian-based DNV, major container shipping lines, represented by the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and leading Ro-Ro ship owners and operators such as Wallenius Wilhelmsen and Grimaldi Euromed SpA. The Task Force also includes shipyards, represented by Damen Shipyards Group, foundations including the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Centre for Zero Carbon Shipping, industry associations, such as the International Windship Association and the One Sea Association and maritime clusters, including TMA BlueTech and the Ocean Autonomy Cluster. The Maritime Sustainability Task Force is the third such initiative to be launched by ESA in the past twelve months, joining the Task Force for Innovation in Energy through Space and the Smart Cities Task Force which were launched in 2023 and form part of the ESA BASS strategy to generate significant green, social and economic impacts on Earth. "articleBody" : "Future Innovations is now a partner in the entrepreneurial initiative of the European Space Agency (ESA), aiming to triple the value of the Norwegian space industry within ten years. Ocean Autonomy Cluster is run by one Future Innovations, one of Norway's largest innovation companies. This is a very exciting opportunity, and I'm glad we get to be a part of it, says FI's CEO, Bjørn Damhaug. The initiative collaborates with the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Eirik S. Sivertsen, project manager for small satellites at NTNU, expresses enthusiasm about this opportunity. This is important for Norway and relates to national capabilities. National control over satellite data is significant for everything from monitoring human activity to managing the cod population. NTNU's interest in this is to conduct research and development and educate candidates for the industry. Therefore, it is strategically important for NTNU to take a position in this initiative, emphasizes Sivertsen. At NTNU's laboratory for small satellites, researcher Sivert Bakken showcases a satellite similar to HYPSO-1, NTNU's first research satellite launched into space in 2022. Using advanced camera technology, it can monitor algal blooms and pollution. The data is collected through an antenna on the roof of the Electro Building at Gløshaugen. Norway has a significant role in the space industry. We are at the forefront, and investing is natural to take this further, says Sivert Bakken. When we have control over satellite data, we can also control how larger images are pieced together. Norway manages large areas, especially maritime areas, where satellite data contributes to increasing the value of other data collection, he points out. Completing the Ocean Space Vertical For Future Innovations, the investment in space technology is a natural extension of their extensive activities related to the ocean. We are already leaders in ocean technology, and space technology will give us even more power in this area, where satellite data plays a crucial role. This includes everything from autonomy and communication to mapping and surveillance. Access to data, experts, and technology from world-leading environments through ESA will open enormous opportunities for innovation and creativity. This initiative will contribute to strengthening the innovation environment in connection with Nyhavna and along our coastal region, says Bjørn Damhaug. The ESA Business Incubator and our relation to ESA are important steps for us to complete the Ocean Space Vertical - from projects and services on the sea floor to the surface, and now in space. Autonomous solutions rely on satellite data for navigation, position, communication, and other needs. So this will be a welcoming service in our toolbox that we can provide for our members in Ocean Autonomy Cluster, says Frode Halvorsen, Cluster manager for Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Left to right: Eirik S. Sivertsen, Sivert Bakken, and Bjørn Damhaug. Photo: Ingrid Skjøtskift/Future Innovations. This antenna on the roof of the Electro Building at NTNU Gløshaugen retrieves data from the research satellite HYPSO-1. Photo: Ingrid Skjøtskift/Future Innovations. Facts Kjeller Innovation and Future Industry and other partners will be part of the ESA Business Incubation Centre Norway 2.0 program in 2024. The incubator's goal is to triple the value of the Norwegian space industry within ten years (from 11 to 33 billion NOK) by assisting 40 new startups and creating 450 new high-tech jobs. Companies accepted into ESA BIC gain access to financial support, technical expertise, and resources and facilities from ESA. Why space technology? Satellites are essential for fundamental societal tasks, monitoring five billion points annually in Norway. This includes surveillance of floods, landslides, seas, shipping traffic, meteorology, water reservoirs, etc. Satellite data plays a crucial role in managing large maritime areas and the Arctic, where Norway has extensive interests. Space technology is a vital part of the observation pyramid; simultaneous monitoring of the same area at multiple levels (satellites, drones, autonomous boats, and underwater drones) provides more knowledge (e.g., about ocean currents, weather phenomena, emissions, and algal blooms). This can lay the foundation for an entirely new industry, value creation, and job opportunities. Space technology is relevant for climate monitoring, communication, intelligence, preparedness, military operations, agriculture, fisheries, and numerous other societal areas.",
