Eelume acquires Ecotone technology to strengthen data collection and increase subsea insight
Eelume has acquired the Trondheim-developed underwater hyperspectral imaging technology Ecotone, bringing together two leading Norwegian technologies to unlock new possibilities for ocean observation and environmental insight to discover more.
Eelume, known for its autonomous, bio-inspired and highly manoeuvrable underwater vehicles is strengthening its capabilities by integrating Ecotone’s advanced hyperspectral imaging systems. The acquisition paves the way for long-term, intelligent monitoring of the marine environment — essential for industries and ecosystems alike.
From research to real-world impact
Ecotone was founded in 2010 as a spin-off from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Over more than a decade, the company has developed underwater sensors capable of mapping and characterizing marine habitats with exceptional precision. Its hyperspectral imaging technology captures detailed spectral information that supports applications in marine science, aquaculture, offshore energy, and biodiversity monitoring.
“This is about bringing together two Norwegian deep-tech innovations that complement each other perfectly,” says Thomas Nygaard, CEO of Eelume.
“Ecotone’s groundbreaking technology has been developed over many years through dedication and scientific excellence. Combined with Eelume’s autonomous vehicles, we can now offer entirely new insights into the underwater environment — essential for responsible ocean management.”

Smarter tools to discover more
Ecotone’s technology has already proven its value in diverse marine operations, including NTNU-led research expeditions in Lake Mjøsa. The combination of autonomous vehicles and high-resolution imaging will enable persistent, low-impact monitoring of vulnerable ecosystems and underwater infrastructure.
With this acquisition, Eelume takes a major step toward building integrated subsea solutions that deliver both operational efficiency and environmental insight — aligning with the growing demand for sustainable ocean management.
