Clean Sea Solutions develops waste-collecting robots for use in marinas. Now, the innovative company is joining FI Ocean Space Incubator.
The UN has described marine pollution as the fastest-growing environmental problem in the world. Between 4.8 and 12.7 million tons of plastic waste end up in the ocean every year, equivalent to a truckload every minute throughout the year.
Currently, marine waste collection is mainly handled by volunteer organizations.
“To truly solve this problem, it has to be profitable. Therefore, our goal is to create a commercial market for marine waste collection,” says Gulleik Olsen, COO of Clean Sea Solutions.

“We are targeting harbors and marinas in countries with an existing infrastructure to manage the waste after it has been collected by our units, and where there is a willingness to pay for our solutions. At the moment, this includes Europe and Singapore, but we are also looking to expand to North America and the rest of Asia in the near future,” Olsen explains.
The company’s goal is to contribute to cleaner oceans and smarter, greener marinas through groundbreaking technology and collaboration with industry players worldwide.

Cleaner Oceans and Cleaner Marinas
The company’s goal is to contribute to cleaner oceans and smarter, greener marinas through groundbreaking technology and collaboration with industry players worldwide.
The company has two different solutions for collecting waste from the water surface: the floating dock Aquapod and the self-driving Aquadrone, both of which collect waste.
Aquapod is a smart waste collector that is permanently mounted on the edge of a dock to remove waste and keep the marina's water surface clean. It can operate 24/7 and collects floating debris in a collection chamber.
Aquapod can collect microplastics as small as one millimeter. It is quiet and can clean up to 700,000 liters of water per day. It can be installed on, under, or inside the dock.
Aquadrone is an autonomous drone that collects waste and pollution from the surface in marinas. It is particularly suited for cleaning the most hard-to-reach areas of the marina. Aquadrone is based on Maritime Robotics' sea drone Otter.

Winner of an International Innovation Award
Earlier this fall, Smart Sea Solutions announced that they had won the innovation award at this year’s Monaco Smart & Sustainable Marinas conference. This prestigious award is given to the most innovative solution that contributes to environmental protection and promotes the sustainable development of marinas.

Clean Sea Solutions' membership in FI Ocean Space Incubator is part of Siva's national incubation program. Clean Sea Solutions is also a member of the Ocean Autonomy Cluster and has received support from Handelens Miljøfond.
