California-based Blue Ocean Gear recently participated in the TMA Bluetech Trade Mission Norway, engaging with key stakeholders across the Norwegian maritime cluster ecosystem, with a particular focus on offshore energy and defense applications.
Blue Ocean Gear is a leader in Smart Buoy Technology for tracking offshore assets and delivering mission-critical ocean data for both commercial industry and defense operations.
Designed by Silicon Valley engineers in partnership with commercial fishers operating in some of the harshest marine environments, the company’s low-cost, patented buoys are ruggedized for performance from Arctic to Antarctic regions. The systems are widely deployed across global waters, with remotely configurable sensor transmission enabling flexible use cases across surface and subsea operations.
Their technology is built to support a broad range of applications, from offshore logistics and fisheries to maritime domain awareness and defense-related situational awareness, with customers operating in every ocean globally.
Kortney Opshaug, CEO and Founder at Blue Ocean Gear Inc, said:
“I joined the Trade Mission to Norway with the goal of seeking new applications and partnerships within the Norwegian maritime ecosystem, particularly with offshore energy and defense applications. The wide range of companies we were able to meet with was impressive, and there is clearly a great potential for the business in the Norwegian market.”

The Trade Mission Norway is a curated programme that connects international technology companies with Norway’s maritime innovation ecosystem, facilitating meetings with industry players, cluster organizations and relevant stakeholders exploring collaboration and market opportunities in areas such as offshore energy, autonomy and defense.
Blue Ocean Gear’s participation underscores growing international interest in Norway as a testbed and collaboration hub for ocean technology innovation, supported by environments such as the Ocean Autonomy Cluster.
