Researchers are hiring game developers for ensuring safe autonomous ferries

Our second insight seminar this year was held as a webinar due to the special situation of the corona pandemic. The topic of the seminar was the Open Simulation Platform (OSP), presented by Øyvind Smogeli, Program Director, Digital Assurance DNV GL – Group Technology and Research.
– It was a great turnout, with enthusiastic participants and a great presentation. It is not unlikely that we will continue with hosting webinars on different topics, even after the society has opened up for physical meetings, says Frode Halvorsen, Cluster Manager of the Ocean Autonomy Cluster.
See the recorded webinar in the video below:
The Open Simulation Platform is a joint industry project for the maritime industry. Its grand vision is to enable collaborative digital twin simulations to solve challenges with designing, commissioning, operating and assuring complex, integrated systems.
In addition to the joint industry project OSP, DNV GL has created the OSP Trust Center as a platform solution that can be offered as a commercial service to the industry. The Trust Center’s mission is to make collaboration within the industry possible in an online format, where they can share ideas, build digital simulation platforms and test virtual integration. The virtual platform will make it possible to go through the whole process, from design and construction to operation.
– We hope to create a new standard where simulations are used in testing, as this is the only way to verify all the safety aspects. This way we can make sure that ships are built for energy-efficiency, safety, and fit-for-purpose, says Øyvind Smogeli after his presentation.
– It is a great vision. We have come a long way, but there is still much to do. The OSP joint industry project will be launched in June 2020 and then made available for the industry. We are hoping that this can become an ecosystem for simulation models, simulation tools and services for these digital twin systems.
