R&D PROJECT

A flexible ferry

Project period: 2022 - 2023

Good connections between island communities and the mainland are challenging in many places. An innovative, flexible ferry solution can increase mobility and quality of service in coastal communities.

The FLEXferry project looks more closely at how autonomous ferry concepts with intelligent information systems can provide more efficient ferry connections.

An important goal is to develop new and energy-efficient vessel concepts, advanced ITS solutions, and new operating models. The solutions will be described both from a current perspective and from expectations for future technology development.

Increased automation, low-staffed, flexible, and cost-effective ferry, and terminal concepts require new knowledge about traffic flow, capacity, emergency preparedness needs, and various operating models. Through the project, FLEKSferry will seek to strengthen knowledge of how autonomous solutions can be used to increase mobility and strengthen the quality of service without increased costs.
