Unplugged strengthens subsea wireless power and autonomy capabilities

Ocean Autonomy Cluster has welcomed Unplugged as a new member company. The Kristiansand-based deeptech company develops wireless power and data transfer solutions for harsh environments, with a strong focus on subsea autonomy, defence applications, and industrial systems.

Founded in 2023, Unplugged delivers inductive wireless power transfer systems ranging from sensor-level charging up to 25 kW solutions, as well as high-bandwidth, Gbps, subsea data transfer, inductive slip rings, and docking and charging infrastructure for autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs).

The company has already established collaborations with major industry players including Equinor, Saipem, Saab, Oceaneering, OneSubsea, NOV, and SKF.

Among Unplugged’s highlighted projects are the world’s longest-resident subsea drone deployment with Equinor and Saipem, the ACCESS AUV underwater refuelling-in-motion programme, and robotic hot-tool-swap solutions developed with Robotic Drilling Systems. The company has also been selected for the NATO DIANA 2026 Challenge Programme.

“We see Ocean Autonomy Cluster as an important arena for collaboration around persistent underwater surveillance, protection of critical subsea infrastructure, and unmanned maritime systems,” says Thomas John Julien Meyer.

Unplugged says it is looking to expand its defence and dual-use activities through collaborative R&D projects, integration partnerships, and internationalisation efforts, particularly in Nordic and Baltic markets.

“Unplugged brings highly relevant expertise within wireless subsea power and data transfer technologies, which are becoming increasingly important for autonomous maritime systems and long-duration subsea operations,” says Frode Halvorsen.

The company also plans to contribute to the cluster through workshops, joint demonstrations, and participation in national and European funding initiatives related to maritime autonomy and defence innovation.
