"articleBody" : "We have the pleasure of welcoming Aquaai Norway AS as a member of the Ocean Autonomy Cluster! Aquaai Norway AS is a marine robotics company that has developed an integrated web platform and a patented bio-inspired fishlike AUVs that collect visual and environmental data. The data is delivered to an online dashboard offering customers an end-to-end solution called FaaS, fish-as-a-service®. – We are a 3P company (People, Planet, Profit) that began in Silicon Valley and are new to Norway. Our team comes from different countries, but each member is a misfit and together we make the perfect setting to innovate, problem-solve, laugh and push the boundaries of biomimicry, robotics, ML, AI, and ocean tech. We’re formed by highly qualified international professionals (NASA, SpaceX, New York Times, Roboticx, Tate & Lyle, UK Royal Navy) with a combination of R&D, operations, business, product manufacturing, and marketing acumen, says Liane Thompson, CEO of Aquaai Norway AS. Aquaai fights the climate crisis by providing data to Blue Economy industries that seek affordable insights to operate sustainably. Hitting seven of the UN SDGs, their system is designed for the 21st century of climate issues to reduce the expense that goes into collecting and tracking visual and environmental data offering an affordable risk management tool for players in reinsurance, aquaculture, smart cities, ports, rivers, dams, first responders (flooding disaster scenarios), ocean & climate research, conservation/MPAs, illegal fishing prevention, etc. Their motivation for joining the Ocean Autonomy Cluster is their entrance to the Norwegian sustainable aquaculture market, where they have partnered with sustainable salmon farms including Kvarøy, suppliers to Whole Foods grocer, Fulton Street Market (NYC), and Michelin chefs. – We have international startup and relocation knowledge coming from Silicon Valley and now operating in Norway. We also have knowledge in marketing – how to get on the map as a young company, and experience with collaboration in pilots. We are already collaborating with Nofima and UiT on EU research and pilots. Soon, we will also collaborate with the Climate Division of ESA (European Space Agency), says Thompson. Aquaai har received Top Aquaculture Innovation (2019) at Fish2.0 Stanford Global Forum; the European Commission’s Seal of Excellence for impact, quality and efficiency (2020); an Innovation Norway grant (2020); and semifinalists at The Hardware Cup CleanTech challenge (2021). You may also read about Aquaai in various articles in Forbes, Bank of the West’s ocean tech study, Verizon’s piece on biomimicry in drones, sustainable aquaculture in World Positive and risk management in CIO. Welcome to the cluster, Aquaai!",

"articleBody" : "We’re proud to welcome the CRAFT Research Group at UiT The Arctic University of Norway, to the cluster! UiT is located in Tromsø city north of the Arctic Circle, making it the world’s northernmost university. CRAFT is part of the Norwegian College of Fisheries Science at UiT and leads research activities integrating various disciplinary perspectives and academic/non-academic knowledge. – We aim to provide science, solutions, and advice for societal, industrial, and political adaptation to complex future challenges in the marine and coastal areas. The keywords of the group are critical futures thinking, inter-/transdisciplinarity, and new technologies and competences in the Blue Sector, says Melania Borit, associate professor and Leader of the CRAFT Research Group. CRAFT is currently working with ideas around the use of autonomous technologies in fishing, and coordinates the AFO-JIGG project, funded by the Research Council of Norway. One of the project’s objectives is to critically evaluate socio-economic and cultural implications of changes towards semi-autonomous fishing to enable preparation for possible failures prior to implementation. – Through the project, we explore the use of autonomous technologies in the Norwegian small-scale fishing fleet. As such, we find the Ocean Autonomy Cluster very relevant for our research, says Borit. Welcome to the cluster, CRAFT!",

"articleBody" : "Zebop is developing an intelligent camera technology platform where sensor data, image/video recording, analysis, processing, encryption, communication, and decision making can be done locally in the camera, enabling faster and more secure AI-powered image solutions. – In short, we provide local decision-making processes based on artificial intelligence and data recognition. Our platform will be universal and available to customers and partners, says Peter Høvik, COO of Zebop. Their solution can be used in a wide range of industries and businesses. An example is the “Smart and Safe City” project, where intelligent cameras are used to detect and alarm drowning accidents, early fire warnings, and detection of large gatherings of people. Another example is the “Smart Aquaculture and Maritime” project, where intelligent cameras will be able to contribute to better decision-making information that has not previously been available in the market. – Maritime industries will experience that new camera technology together with artificial intelligence will change the way we organize surveillance and HSE/safety, and how we organize and carry out operation and maintenance. If one is to highlight an industry that will be able to reap great benefits here, then it must be the aquaculture industry, says Høvik Apart from artificial intelligence, other vital technologies are Computer Vision (CV) for observation and interpretation of visual information, and EDGE Computing for fast and local computing. By storing and processing locally and not in the cloud, data can be processed and interpreted faster, resulting in faster decision-making and support in critical situations. – Our solutions challenge the paradigms of centralized cloud computing and network security with next-generation technologies that will impact the current state of rules and regulations on data security. To fully enable the possibilities of Industry 4.0, we need new standards that allow more innovative use of big data and image processing, says Høvik. Read more about Zebop at zebop.io!",

"articleBody" : "Screenshot: Zebop Zebop, our newest cluster member, wants to use artificial intelligence and 5G technology to prevent people from drowning. Over the next six months, day and night, people will voluntarily jump into the Nidelva river in Trondheim, Norway, to help an intelligent camera learn to understand and warn drowning accidents. This is part of the project “Safety along the Nidelva and the Channel (“Sikring langs Nidelva og Kanalen” in Norwegian). Several drowning accidents have occurred in Nidelva in the past years. In March, the Trondheim City Council set aside money for sensor technology that can alert people falling into the water. – It started with us reading the articles about the accidents in Adresseavisen. Then we thought: We have to do something about this, says the general manager of Zebop, Oscar Markovic, to the regional newspaper Adresseavisen (Norwegian). Through product development for aquaculture within smart camera technology based on applications for Computer Vision, Edge Computing, IoT, and industry 4.0, Zebop has been challenged to develop a camera solution that can register a person falling overboard, falling in the water outside a quay, in the canal or river, from a fishing cage or other places where it’s not natural for a person to be in the water. Zebop’s proposal is to set up an intelligent camera under one of the busiest bridges over the river, that will be able to alert the emergency services when someone falls into the water. This animation video shows how the concept works. A crucial aspect is therefore to learn the camera to recognize people who fall into the water, make intelligent decisions based on that recognition and alert the emergency services. – The system must learn to know the difference between a seagull, a bicycle thrown into the water, or a human being, says Markovic to the newspaper. The learning and decision-making will be based on an annual 120 million images, stored and processed in the camera itself. This makes the system faster than compared to using a cloud, and Zebop states that the camera will be able to alarm the emergency services even before the person hits the water surface. Privacy will be safeguarded, as the camera only captures the outline of people passing, and measures temperature differences. 14 companies are part of the project, including the supplier industry, insurance companies, public agencies, academia, R&D, IT, and software companies. Several of the participants are also members of the Ocean Autonomy Cluster. The project has received funds from the Regional Research Fund. Read the original article at adressa.no (in Norwegian).",

"articleBody" : "RFF Trøndelag (Trøndelag Regional Research Fund) has granted the cluster’s Digifjord project (Digital Trondheimsfjord) NOK 700.000 to continue the development of a digital platform for testing and verification of autonomous ocean technologies. The project includes a number of disciplines, such as design (product, service and user design), cybernetics, game development, in addition to a number of marine engineering disciplines. In short, the Digifjord project will create new knowledge on how easily accessible 3D technology, open data, photogrammetry and virtual models can be used for simulation and early testing of autonomous vessels and operations in the ocean space. An expected outcome of the project is increased efficiency and reduced costs for early-phase testing and verification of autonomous systems for maritime applications. The project period is from April 2021 to April 2022. Project partners: Ocean Autonomy Cluster / Fremtidens Industri (Project owner) NTNU – Norwegian University of Science and Technology Breach Maritime Robotics Zeabuz Njord – The Autonomous Ship Challenge As of today, there are many unresolved questions related to how autonomous ships should be able to operate safely and efficiently. Automation has so far been shown to be dependent on human monitoring and control, and we have a growing field of study aimed at interaction solutions between autonomous systems and operators. Major players are now building autonomous ships, with several more to come within a few years. With the development of new autonomous ships and solutions, there is a growing need for knowledge about solutions for monitoring and remote operations and infrastructure for testing. Although knowledge from the automotive industry has some transfer-value to maritime applications, developing a virtual and digital model of the fjord and its surroundings as a platform where digital twins and data are combined for testing, simulation and verification, raises several challenges.",

"articleBody" : "The Norwegian-Mexican cooperation project Thalasso has a blue and circular economy approach to their main objective: To harvest sargassum, an invasive seaweed that is threatening the Caribbean Region. – With our circular economy approach, we turn the hazard into an opportunity. We do this by introducing autonomous harvesting drones that can be remotely controlled from any location worldwide, says Frode Stolen Sønstebø, CEO of Thalasso AS. Their solution is the autonomous Aquadrone, under development by cluster member Clean Sea Solutions. The drone is tested in the rough North Sea conditions, and with the latest in autonomous aquatic technology. Each drone can harvest from 4-6 tons per hour. Sargassum is an invasive seaweed that is threatening the Caribbean Region. Illustration: Thalasso Illustration: Clean Sea Solutions The sargassum is valuable, and its possible end products are many: Fertilizer, green energy, compost, animal food, and much more. – There are many challenges harvesting sargassum. We need to tackle all the obstacles in a rough and unpredictable ocean and at the same time take care of all the environmental aspects. We have developed a unique solution that covers all this and more, says Sænstebø. The solution is also available and affordable for governments, hotels and marinas with less flexible economies. Thalasso wishes to further strengthen the ecosystems and livelihoods for locals, supporting a sustainable solution that can not only make sure the coastal lines clean but also create local jobs and an additional potentially large new economy. We are very happy to welcome Thalasso to the cluster!",

"articleBody" : "It’s with great pleasure that we announce our cooperation with the Norwegian Computer Society (DND – Den norske dataforening)! Together with Maritime Robotics and DND, we have discussed the possibility of a DND subdivision to focus on the ocean, technology, and maritime technology. The result of these discussions is a new DND subdivision called Ocean Technology. This will be a platform for people who are interested in ocean technology, and all of the possibilities the ocean provides. DND is a non-profit organization that focuses on IT and Technology. It is run by volunteers who have a passion for technology and want to create a meeting place for like-minded people. They are Norway’s biggest organization for IT professionals and people who have an interest in IT. The organization is divided into many sub-groups, where people have the chance to indulge themself in topics of their interest. As of today, they have more than 50 different groups on different subjects. Some of the subjects involve AI, Robotics, Business Intelligence & Analytics, and now also Ocean Technology. We had an interview with Eirik Kristiansen, Chairman of DND’s Midt-Nord department, to talk about Ocean Technology: Could you tell us some more about the Ocean Technology initiative? — The initiative was started between Ocean Autonomy Cluster (OAC), Maritime Robotics, and DND. It was OAC and Maritime Robotics who started the conversation regarding this group. Trondheim has an incredible amount of technology being developed here. Especially the environment on autonomy and ocean technology makes Trondheim an exceptional place for developement of ocean technology. Why is DND supporting this initiative? — We are eager to develop an arena where Trondheim, and all of the technology developed here, can be in focus. Technological development is an essential part of autonomy and ocean technology, and we think it’s a given that we contribute to creating content and places for discussion. Being able to create a platform where different partners, students, and organizations can discuss opportunities and ideas, is beneficial to all parties involved. There are a lot of exciting companies, activities, and initiatives going on in Trondheim. Together with SINTEF and NTNU, Trondheim has become a world-leading test arena for ocean autonomy. What kind of activities would you like to see happening with Ocean Technology? — We are hosting our first-ever meeting on the 17th of March. This will be an intro meeting where we will introduce ourselves, the ideas for this sub-group, and start getting to know interested parties. For the future, I hope we can grow into a really big division where we have a lot of interest. Hopefully, we can put together conferences and other big happenings. Also, I hope we will be able to show the technology being developed here. There are so many companies that are producing hands-on products, it could be really cool to showcase these. We have a lot of ideas! Who is the Ocean Technology group open for? — Ocean Technology, and all of the other sub-groups, are open to everybody! Not only companies and members, but everyone who has an interest in ocean technology is welcome to our events. We are also hoping that we can collaborate with Ocean Autonomy Cluster to reach students. There will be no fee for students to join, and we want to engage students, so they can get curious and take an interest in ocean technology early. After talking with Kristiansen it was very clear that we are able to reach even further together. In collaboration, we can gather dedicated people and build a better foundation for collaboration between the industry and people who have an interest in IT. We are looking forward to starting working with DND and Ocean Technology. If you are interested in hearing more about the collaboration and plans for the future, check out our event on the 17th of March. Hope to see you there!",

"articleBody" : "Illustration: Mikael Sætereid/Fremtidens Industri. AutoAgri and SAP Norway have agreed to collaborate. The purpose of the cooperation is to map the load in the structure of AutoAgri’s autonomous tractor. This is an essential step towards optimizing the innovative tractor. – We think this is super exciting, says the development manager at SAP Norway, Martin Hasle. After looking for projects they could be a part of, they were put in touch with AutoAgri. – We quickly saw that they needed the technology we have, says Hasle. SAP has software for simulating physical objects. It can be anything from oil platforms to smaller components. – The most important thing is that our software is high-speed, and that we can do real-time simulation, says Hasle. It is this technology that they will contribute to during the prototype testing of AutoAgri’s autonomous tractor. They will soon be ready to start the testing. – Our test season is from May and throughout the summer. It is very nice to have a professional partner on the team who will help us with the testing. SAP will help us retrieve data and process the data, says Jostein Sandvik in AutoAgri. During the prototype testing, they will map how the load on the tractor’s structure is, depending on, for example, speed, terrain, equipment and lifting weight. – Then, the tractor will have all the instrumentation, and the results we get from the testing will be fed into a digital twin. We will use the results we get to adapt and optimize the tractor. Then we will take it further from prototype to demo, then full scale, Sandvik says. – By doing it this way, we get thorough tests, while we get a lot of data collected in a short time, says Hasle. – The collaboration with SAP gives us an important tool that provides us with good insight into what measures we must implement, says Sandvik. – Because this is an autonomous vehicle, you are more dependent on such tests. There is no driver who can observe how the vehicle reacts and handles various stresses, says Hasle. Sandvik believes the testing will be more thorough by conducting it in collaboration with SAP. – We have developed a tractor that is not like other tractors. This means that we have no basis for comparison. Therefore, it is difficult for us to rely on experience from tests of other tractors. We get thorough tests through the collaboration with SAP, and the testing itself will take less time. Thorough testing, the risk of the project will be significantly reduced. – It again leads to the tractor being safer and optimal for the customer, he adds. The testing and the digital twin will also be useful for AutoaAgri and their customers when the tractor has entered the commercial market. – The tool that SAP develops can also be used further in the production, service, and maintenance of the tractor. The opportunity to continue to use the tool has been particularly interesting for us, says Sandvik.",
