"articleBody" : "iDROP develop an autonomous drone that dramatically changes the efficiency of collecting ocean bottom data. The company is situated at Fornebu/Oslo, with a design- and production site in Fredrikstad and operations coordination from a Bergen office. The technology span a wide range of disciplines, from cybernetics (Sintef and NTNU/AMOS are also involved) to electronics and power management. Our drones, currently a pre-production series of 27, is in the final stage of assembly; they will be tested continuously for the remaining part of this year and early 2023 but may join international pilot client globally in early spring. We want to expand our industry- and academic network and strongly believe a community effort will move the technology development forward, says Kyrre Tjøm from iDrop. In what ways can iDrop contribute to the cluster community? – iDROP is a strong technology hub with an extensive collective academic base, operational experience and vast knowledge in the relevant industry, spanning many years working with technology majors, eg Schlumberger, Vognite and ABB, and a strong international network For more information about iDrop, visit https://www.idrop.no/",

"articleBody" : "A very own “craigslist” for the maritime sector is now making it easier for start-ups to access equipment and facilities to test and pilot new technologies. The aim is to lower the barriers and widen the innovation funnel. Frode Halvorsen, cluster manager, OAC – Technology founders and start-up companies depend entirely on testing and verifying their technology. Therefore, they must have access to infrastructure for testing and demonstration. They don’t have that today, says Frode Halvorsen, manager of the maritime cluster Ocean Autonomy Cluster (OAC) in Trondheim. Trøndelag is ranked as one of Europe’s most innovative regions, with a population among the highest educated in Norway. The region’s largest city, Trondheim, is known as Norway’s Technology Capital and is home to more than 37 000 students, 5000 researchers, creative founders, entrepreneurs, and well-established global maritime industries. This forms the perfect ecosystem for innovation. – SINTEF and NTNU and their innovation and research centers spin out revolutionary technologies like never before. To seize the business opportunities this provides – and accelerate tech maturity, there is a need to provide a platform for collaboration on tests and demos, says Halvorsen. From Natural Resources to Knowledge-Economy This year the Norwegian Authorities announced a new export reform for a post-oil era. The shift from natural resources to knowledge is significant; In the next eight years, the program “Hele Norge Eksporterer” (All of Norway Exports), the non-oil export goals are set to a 50 % increase. As a country with deep ties to the ocean, Norway is interested in strengthening maritime innovation. – Knowledge-based products and sustainable value creation are vital for the green shift. We hope this portal will be a fruitful addition to the innovation activities in Trøndelag – and a gateway to national and international collaborations on real-world testing, Halvorsen states. – On Testination.io, you’ll find an overview of available test facilities in the region, where they are, and who owns them. Both private and public actors can enter what they offer regarding test facilities. It will be a kind of “yellow pages” for testing sea-based technology, and we will develop the website further, says Halvorsen. Check out the website Testination.io.",

"articleBody" : "– Ocean Space Incubator will become Norway’s leading environment for sustainable growth companies within ocean space technology and maritime energy. That’s what Bjørn Damhaug, general manager of the innovation company Fremtidens Industri (FI), says, which has now received the green light from both Siva and Trøndelag county council to establish the incubator. Siva’s incubation program aims to contribute to increased national value creation by identifying, commercializing, and further developing innovative ideas for new growth companies and triggering growth in established businesses. Who gets to run the incubators is decided in a national competition. – We are happy that our application came out well in this competition. It is also very positive that the politicians see the great opportunities for innovation and new value creation that exist within ocean space technology and maritime energy solutions, says Damhaug. Closing the gap Norway is a maritime power with great growth ambitions for the blue sector. At the same time, ambitious climate targets have been set, which the business world must deal with. – This has triggered a great demand for new technologies and sustainable solutions. The academy has responded with major investment in energy and ocean space technology development. However, until now the link between idea development and commercialization still needs to be added, says Damhaug. The consequence is that Norwegian value creation slows down, and the probability of reaching national and global climate targets decreases. – Ocean Space Incubator will help to close this gap by being a market-close reception device for the good ideas and solutions, and companies with potential for commercialisation, says Damhaug. Established in the technology capital Being a link between academia, the technology, and industry sectors is something FI works on daily. The innovation company leads, among other things, business clusters with extensive national and international operations for the ocean space; NCE Aquatech Cluster, RENERGY – Renewable Energy Cluster, and Ocean Autonomy Cluster. – We also have extensive experience with industrial collaboration and R&D projects with companies SINTEF and NTNU, says Damhaug. The incubator’s head office will be established together with the rest of the innovation environment at Nyhavna in Trondheim. – Norway is a world leader in ocean space technology, and Nyhavna is central to developing and rolling out sustainable solutions nationally and internationally. Together with industry, the technology environment, and the competence environments at NTNU and SINTEF, the Ocean Space Incubator will contribute to Norway maintaining and strengthening its leading position in ocean space technology, says Damhaug. In addition to Nyhavna, the incubator will establish nodes in Hitra, Fosen and in Nærøysund. Here too, incubation companies will have access to, among other things, incubation services and infrastructure, says Damhaug. This is Siva’s incubator program Siva – The company for industrial growth – is a state enterprise that develops, owns, and finances a national infrastructure for innovation and business development consisting of incubators, business parks, catapult centers, innovation companies, and innovation centers and industrial buildings. Through the program, Siva contributes NOK 1.5 – 5 million in annual grants, which the incubator uses to develop start-up companies and “spinoffs” from established companies. An incubator is an innovation company or part of an innovative company. These will contribute to establishing and developing new growth companies and creating growth in established businesses by offering and making available advice within business development and commercialization at a subsidized cost. They offer a professional and social environment where entrepreneurs, companies, academia, R&D environments, investors, and others connect. Siva has operator responsibility for the program, which was established in 2012 and will last until 2022. From 1 January 2020, the county municipalities are clients of the national incubation program. "articleBody" : "The young start-up company Ocean Access has taken a leap from the safe incubator at NTNU, and down to the quayside at Nyhavna, ready to speed up testing and development of their unique communication buoy. – We are so excited to be here, says Andreas Mauritzen, CEO of Ocean Access, while giving us the “grand tour” of the newly renovated office at the port area at Nyhavna in Trondheim. Next door is the workshop where endless hours of screwing and tinkering await. It’s barely two years since he and his co-founder and CTO Fredrik Lilleøkdal launched the idea of new ways of monitoring the world below the ocean surface during their master study at NTNU. Now the idea has turned into a company of six employees and brand-new offices seaside where several other start-ups and maritime tech companies also are located. – This is just the right spot for a maritime start-up. We are closer to the sea, and it is possible to build up an even stronger environment in the area here, with technology companies and start-ups like us from the maritime industry. I think that kind of environment gives an important boost, Mauritzen says and explains: – From day one of our journey, we have been dependent on talking to other companies, and experienced people from the industry who can give us advice and share their experience and expertise with us. We learn new things every day, and it has been extremely important for us to have people we can talk to. I think getting an environment around you with people who help each other is hugely important. CTO Fredrik Lilleøkdal couldn’t agree more. – Here at Nyhavna, we can reduce the time we used to spend getting out to sea. Instead of packing up the car and driving across town, you can wheel the equipment straight out to sea. It is a great value, he adds. Subsea monitoring Remote ocean monitoring has been widely demanded in various maritime industries. With the current international situation and climate challenges in mind, their communication buoy is needed more than ever. – We started out investigating monitoring solutions for early detection of leakages from subsea wells on the ocean floor. But we learned early that the largest challenge was to improve how these monitoring solutions could communicate between the seabed and shore. Under the ocean surface, you are isolated with no means to communicate. This challenge triggered the journey we now are on. We are aiming to develop a system collecting data from the seabed, and periodically going up to the surface to transfer the data to other devices back onshore, says Mauritzen. The buoy can move up and down the water column and operate both subsea and on the ocean surface. By avoiding the toughest sea conditions, we can make remote operations more reliable and provide cost savings to meet the growing need for ocean data and digital operations in the scientific and offshore markets. – We see many potential applications. The oil and gas industry is an interesting sector for this technology, and monitoring of sub-seabed CO2 storage may be another application area in the future. Ocean research under the marginal ice zone in the arctics may also be an area of use. We are becoming a company that develops buoys for different segments and areas of use, but with remote monitoring, data collection, and transfer of data from the ocean as the main services, Mauritzen explains and shares some final visions of the future. – Knowing how little data we have from the ocean today, we believe this kind of monitoring will be an increasing need in the future, where big data and digitalization will be even more important, not only within the oil and gas sector but also within offshore wind, aquaculture, and climate studies, Mauritzen says. Learn more at OceanAccess.no Andreas Mauritzen and Fredrik Lilleøkdal showing the communication buoy at their new workshop at Nyhavna. The communication buoy tested at SINTEF’s towing tank in August. Fredrik Lilleøkdal is happy with the testing so far. The test is monitored at the control room. Fredrik Lilleøkdal is doing some adjustments. The communication buoy descends to the bottom to collect data.",

"articleBody" : "This year’s Ocean Autonomy Conference aimed to connect the dots between human factors, transport systems, and industry logistics to ensure a sustainable, safe, and robust future of autonomous ocean operations. We’ve learned how talent density increases when countries connect better, and how the public ports face new technologies and new, environmental demands. We’ve discussed the possibilities of autonomous feeders that can enable the next level supply chain, and how innovation is done in real life by those working hands-on with both the mechanics, the customers, and the economists. We also got perspectives on the European backdrop, with new, vulnerable logistics, uncertain global politics, and climate crisis, as well as safety issues both in automation and digitalization. At last, we also got to draw historical lines in the Norwegian era of shipping and address the humans in an unmanned maritime future – and finally: Celebrate a big milestone as milliAmpere II was launched as the world’s first unmanned passenger ferry going into trial operations. Thank you to everyone contributing both on stage and off stage to make the dots connect and bring new ideas into the conversations on the maritime future.",

"articleBody" : "Biologists and cyberneticians at NTNU have built a smart robot, quick and inexpensive to operate, that can, among other things, take samples of microplastics and measure the density of salmon lice. The unmanned surface vessel (USV), named “Pamela”, is the result of an interdisciplinary collaboration between doctoral candidate Andrea Faltynkova from the Department of Biology and Artur Zolich, a postdoctoral fellow at the Department of Technical Cybernetics. Se Pamela in action. Studying microplastics becomes easier with “Pamela” Faltynkova studies microplastics in the ocean. Microplastics are pieces of plastic smaller than 5 millimeters. Microplastics is known to have negative effects on marine and freshwater life, but we know less about how it affects human health. Studying microplastics is tricky because it comes in so many varieties and is smaller than five millimeters. – Microplastics are so heterogeneous. It is a large, diverse group of particles. In addition, it is also unevenly distributed in the water bodies, says Faltynkova. – Microplastics are not like other types of dissolved pollutants that we can detect even if we only look at small amounts of water or soil. If you take a liter of seawater and there is no plastic in it, can you conclude that there is no plastic in the sea? she asks. A common procedure today is to go out by boat and collect samples a few times, from which the researchers try to draw conclusions based on how much plastic has been collected. – But we really have no way of knowing how good the estimates are, says Faltynkova. Uses hyperspectral imaging Faltynkova’s main research project is to adapt and develop a technique called hyperspectral imaging to identify and count microplastics. This technology was developed in the mid-1980s to study the Earth from aircraft or space. Today, it is used for everything from studying shipwrecks to identifying different types of tissue in humans. The recycling industry uses this technology to separate plastics. This makes it a perfect tool for studying microplastics. With a hyperspectral camera, Faltynkova takes a picture of the samples. NTNU’s supercomputer Idun then processes large amounts of data to determine what types of plastic are captured in a sample. Combines fast analysis with a fast collection Collecting microplastics usually means dragging a net behind a boat at a very low speed. This is both expensive and inefficient. But Faltynkova can study many samples because Pamela collects them so quickly, easily, and efficiently. Pamela doesn’t cost much and can work independently. – I am trying to connect rapid analysis using hyperspectral imaging with a method that makes it possible to collect samples quickly, says Faltynkova. – Together, this will give us a greater opportunity to map and monitor plastic pollution effectively. Can follow the planned route Pamela is held up by two orange buoys, just like those from the popular TV series Baywatch. – Pamela can follow a pre-programmed route without scientists having to accompany or control the vessel while it does its job, says Zolich, who invented the robot. Pamela is designed to meet the needs of those who will use it, and the robot continues to be modified – based on the response of the first users. The advanced machine uses inexpensive, readily available components where possible, and uses prototype components for parts that must be customized specifically for the robot. This means that it is both easy to use and easy to improve. Among the other advantages of the vessel is that it can be controlled from a distance and operate independently of a boat. – The vessel is built up of modules, so that it can be adapted and specialized in several ways depending on what the researchers want to collect, Zolich explains. The collaboration between Faltynkova and Zolich was initiated by NTNU biologist Geir Johnsen, and has been supported by Tor Arne Johansen at the Department of Technical Cybernetics. Johnsen and Johansen are both key researchers at the Center for Autonomous Marine Operations and Systems (AMOS) at NTNU. This article was first published by Gemini.no",
