"articleBody" : "On Tuesday, April 30th, Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth (Labour Party) and Minister of Research and Higher Education Oddmund Hoel (Centre Party) unveiled the government's strategy for increased investment in research and development in the business sector. Eirik Hovstein in Maritime Robotics demonstrating the Otter for Cecilie Myrseth and Oddmund Hoel. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset The government has set an ambitious goal for Norway to allocate three percent of GDP to research and development (R&D) by 2030. The aim is for two out of the three percent to come from the business sector. The launch took place at Maritime Robotics in Trondheim, a leading supplier of advanced autonomous technology for maritime operations. Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset One of the messages from the Minister of Research and Higher Education was that Norwegian research needs more wealthy uncles and aunts, said the ministers. In addition to speeches from the ministers, there were presentations by Alexandra Bech Gjørv from SINTEF and rector Tor Grande from NTNU. Vegard Hovstein presented the success story of Maritime Robotics, Bjørn Jalving from Kongsberg Maritime emphasized the importance of collaboration in the ecosystem, and the tripartite cooperation between business, research, and education. Much of Kongsberg Group's research is conducted as part of further development in already established product lines. Several speakers highlighted the importance of research in defense, societal security, and emergency preparedness. Minister of Research and Higher Education Oddmund Hoel. "articleBody" : "Minister of Trade and Industry Cecilie Myrseth, and Minister of Research and Higher Education Oddmund Hoel will visit Trondheim on Tuesday April 30'th. The agenda is to launch the new strategy for increased investment in research and development in the business community. Here they meet representatives from research and business, and get to try out autonomous vessels in the harbor basin. Minister of Research and Higher Education, Oddmund Hoel The Government has set an ambitious goal of Norway using three percent of GDP on research and development (R&D) by 2030. The goal is for two of the three percent to come from the private sector. Although R&D investments in the private sector have increased in the last decade, Norway is still far from this goal. Norway is also below the OECD average and behind our Nordic neighbors. Now the government is presenting its strategy for how Norway can get the private sector to increase its R&D investments. The launch will take place at Maritime Robotics in Trondheim, which is a leading supplier of advanced autonomous technology for maritime operations. Presentation of Autonomous Vessels in the Harbor Basin Maritime Robotics will showcase its technology, which has been delivered to nearly 200 vessels worldwide. Here, the ministers will have the opportunity to see and operate technology that is currently being used to secure maritime areas in Ukraine, reduce climate emissions associated with krill fishing in the Arctic, and provide researchers with a better understanding of the oceans in a new and environmentally friendly way. There will also be a demonstration of one of Kongsberg Maritime's test vessels, Ocean Space Lab, which is used for research and development of new navigation systems. Minister of Trade and Industry, Cecilie Myrseth Student exhibition, coffee and cake Finally, there will be mingling, coffee and cake in the Maritime Robotics premises. "articleBody" : "The new lightweight drone Pamela joins Ocean Autonomy Cluster. F & Z Solutions is manufacturing lightweight, portable drones that collect data from the water surface using sensors that provide real-time data and/or collect physical samples. The founder Andrea Faltynkova just signed membership in Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Andrea is originally from Canada and has been living in Norway for almost 8 years. She has completed a master's and a Ph.D. in Marine Chemistry and Toxicology at NTNU, finishing her Ph.D. in January 2024. The lightweight, portable drone Pamela Over the past two years, she has collaborated with Artur Zolich, who at the time was a postdoc in cybernetics at NTNU, and together they developed a lightweight, portable drone for sampling microplastics (this was the topic of her doctoral thesis). This was the starting point for the solution they offer today. The goal of the platform is to enhance environmental monitoring capacity while lowering the threshold for data collection, Andrea says. This makes it cheaper and easier to collect more data of higher quality, enabling better interpretation of the environmental condition. Artur Zolich co-founder of F & Z Solutions The drone named Pamela can be used by researchers, public monitoring programs, and the industry to map pollution and optimize production. What makes them unique is that they focus on the environment, creating a product that can be used without experience or expertise in robotics. As Artur says, they are a drone company for people who don't care about drones. What makes them interesting is how they can solve mapping and monitoring problems in a simple and cost-effective way. Pamela at work. Routine tests in Aker Brygge,Oslo. Photo: Artur Zolich We are a new start-up that was founded in early 2024, and we joined OAC to build a network within marine technology. We are one of many drone companies originating from NTNU, and we hope that we can learn from others' experiences. We look forward to collaborating with other companies in OAC, especially on an international scale. We are in the early stages of our startup, and thus, we are also interested in the incubator that OAC offers, Andrea says. With my background in biology, I am particularly interested in learning more about the marine tech environment, while also contributing my perspective as an environmental researcher. Glad to have Pamela on board We are really glad to have Pamela on board as a new member, Says Frode Halvorsen, manager for Ocean Autonomy Cluster. This is evidence of the flourishing ocean tech community in Trondheim and technology that has found a real-world problem. We are looking forward to introducing Pamela to the rest of the members, and we will do what we can to support their growth Frode Halvorsen, Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Future Innovations Rescued by Pamela Like most good ideas, Pamela was actually a makeshift solution. Artur had asked to have some simple plastic shapes made for buoyancy, but the person supposed to do the job never delivered the product and did not respond to emails. So Artur had to find components for the job that could be bought and used immediately, and then he found the buoys. Artur is originally from Poland, and in Poland, these buoys are called Pamela, after the Baywatch series, of course. It became a natural nickname, and we find that the name helps to make the USV a bit more approachable - it emerges more as a fun tool than a scary machine, which we consider very positive since we aim to introduce USVs to people without a technical background. It was just lucky that the buoys worked great in the end, and it doesn't hurt that the cost is low, Andrea says. Pamela used in fieldwork by Masters student Catherine Deschenes in Runde, Norway. "articleBody" : "Concrest Energy AS is developing new technology in wave power. The technology aims to provide a more stable power exchange than traditional wave power and can also be combined with wind power. Concrest Energy is now becoming a member of FI – Ocean Space Incubator. Concrest Energy was founded and is led by Leif Arne Tønnessen. He holds a degree in marine technology engineering and has held positions as a technology leader in the maritime and offshore industries for three decades. Leif Arne Tønnesen, gründer and leader of Concrest Energy The patented wave power system has a power capacity surpassing traditional wave power, enabling significantly lower costs for produced electric power, says Tønnessen. The innovation lies in the system arrangement and the dynamic interaction between the buoys harvesting wave energy. The commercial strategy is to install the wave power system alongside offshore wind farms, achieving better utilization of infrastructure and service facilities. Studies show that energy density per offshore area can double by combining wave and wind energy capture. All components and subsystems included in the solution are currently available on the market. This is significant for both risk, cost, and time to a commercial product. Ingrid Margrethe Sandnes, manager at FI – Ocean Space Incubator. Concrest Energy has developed a concept in wave power that I look forward to following further, says Ingrid Margrethe Sandnes, manager at FI – Ocean Space Incubator. Many are skeptical about wave power, but Concrest Energy has created a simple, robust, and scalable concept to address obstacles that previous solutions have not overcome. The incubator will assist the company with commercialization and financing, she says. Exciting Concept I find the concept of Concrest Energy to be one of the most exciting I've seen in wave power, says Thomas Bjørdal of the energy cluster RENERGY. While most others face significant cost issues that follow even if scaling is technically feasible, Concrest could scale without a corresponding increase in costs. Put another way, if it works technically, it should be possible to achieve a competitive price per produced kWh compared to other forms of ocean energy. For a cluster with nearly 100 members, it's crucial to have access to the expertise and resources of the Ocean Space Incubator. That type of assistance is critically important for startups that need help which we, as a cluster team, don't have the capacity for. But with the combination of our network and experience, along with guidance and support from Ingrid, the conditions are ripe for success, he says. Thomas Bjørdal in RENERGY Cluster. "articleBody" : "Article in Norwegian We are happy to announce that Inventas now becomes member of Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Inventas is one of Norway's largest service providers within product development and innovation. The innovation company is now joining the Ocean Autonomy Cluster business cluster. One of our largest market segments and areas of focus is the maritime sector. We have a desire to increase our expertise, and we believe this happens best through collaboration with companies in the industry, says Mads Martinussen, sales manager for the Mid region at Inventas. OAC is a meeting place that provides an opportunity to expand our network and a platform to discuss current and future issues, he says. Inventas is an independent consulting company with strong expertise in all facets of modern product development. The company was founded in 1997 and today has over 160 engineers and designers. The operational activities take place in six regional departments: Trondheim, Molde, Oslo, Asker, Stavanger, Bergen, and Kristiansand. The company is employee-owned. Mads Martinussen, Inventas We see that OAC is a cluster in the region capable of achieving good and exciting projects within the maritime sector with a focus on autonomy. As strong contributors to the establishment of, among other things, Testination and Midas, they have shown the ability to bring academia and industry together effectively in the region. Therefore, it was easy for Inventas to join to be part of this development, says Martinussen. Inventas is nationwide and has been developing products and solving problems for its customers for almost 30 years. Therefore, we believe that we can be an important contributor to several of the projects in the cluster and possess much of the expertise and tools required, he says. Frode Halvorsen, manager Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Photo Lars Bugge Aarset/Fremtidens Industri Inventas has extensive experience within the maritime domain. They enhance the cluster's capacity for innovation and design, and already collaborate closely with several of our member companies, says cluster manager Frode Halvorsen. By combining strong professionals and creative innovators in our own development framework, we create unique solutions. This makes our customers better and more profitable. Inventas stands at the intersection of science and art, between engineers' precision and designers' vision. We call it 'engineering art.' We bring this with us into OAC with a desire to contribute for the benefit of the cluster and its members, says Martinussen. Inventas has contributed with design work for the snake robot Eelume.
