"articleBody" : "Les saken på norsk This week and the next, the Trondheim Fjord and Nyhavna are once again buzzing with activity as student teams from around the world arrive to prepare for this year’s edition of Njord Challenge. The competition in autonomous ships is organized by students at NTNU and has become an important arena for connecting future technologists with today’s maritime industry. The first week, from August 4–10, is dedicated to testing, technical development, and mentoring. The competition itself kicks off August 11 and runs until August 15, featuring open demo days and finals held at Nyhavna. World-Class Technology in Action The teams will tackle complex maritime tasks using Autonomous Surface Vessels (ASVs), including collision avoidance, autonomous docking, and maneuvering – all performed at autonomy level 4, meaning fully unmanned operations. “Njord Challenge is a truly unique arena for both recruitment and innovation,” says Frode Halvorsen, General Manager of Ocean Autonomy Cluster. “Students get to test technology and solutions in real-world conditions, while the industry meets some of the brightest minds in maritime autonomy. This is a competition we are proud to support.” Njord Challenge 2024. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Fremtidens Industri Bridging Education and Industry The competition started with a digital pilot in 2021 and has been held physically at Nyhavna since 2023. It has grown rapidly in both scale and ambition. This year’s program combines hands-on testing with digital simulation through the use of digital twins – a method that accelerates iteration and learning. “Our goal is to give students hands-on experience with technology and real-world problem solving,” says Kasper T. Langland, Project Manager of Njord Challenge. “We want to bridge the gap between education and industry and establish Trondheim as a natural hub for autonomous shipping.” Ocean Autonomy Cluster has been a partner since the beginning, and the competition has evolved into a vital meeting point between students, academia, and the maritime sector. Njord Challenge 2024. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Fremtidens Industri Collaboration, Sharing and Inspiration Last year’s winner, Navier USN from the University of South-Eastern Norway, impressed with their technical solutions and open sharing of AI models – reflecting the competition’s strong culture of collaboration and knowledge exchange. This year’s challenge brings together teams from across the globe and is supported by sponsors such as Kongsberg Discovery, DNV, MathWorks, SINTEF, NTNU, and Torghatten. The competition days, August 11–15, feature an open day, sponsor visits, and finals in the fjord – with Nyhavna as the stage for tomorrow’s maritime solutions. "articleBody" : "Les saken på norsk The first step in the Make Nyhavna Clean Again initiative was taken this week, as Ocean Access deployed its first buoy outside HAVET in Trondheim. The buoy will gather real-time data from the harbor to support better and more precise water quality monitoring. This initiative is a collaborative effort between technology companies and NTNU, Norway's leading university for science and technology. By combining sensors, data modelling, and a strong local partnership, the project aims to build a solid knowledge base about water conditions at Nyhavna. Photo: Frode Halvorsen/Fremtidens Industri We’re not measuring E. coli – yet – but the buoy will collect key parameters that help us build accurate models of the water quality in the area, says Frode Halvorsen, Cluster Manager at Ocean Autonomy Cluster. This is a classic example of how innovation and collaboration go hand in hand. Ocean Access’ smart buoy is part of a long-term ambition to restore and revitalize the harbor area. The goal is to make data more accessible and relevant for planners, environmental researchers, and the community alike. Photo: Frode Halvorsen/Fremtidens Industri This kind of grassroots-driven technology project shows what can happen when you mix curiosity, competence, and a great neighborhood, Halvorsen adds. We're especially grateful to our good neighbors at NTNU for providing the boat for launch. This kind of support is invaluable. Nyhavna is currently undergoing major transformation, and projects like this aim to ensure that development is based on facts and real-time environmental insight. "articleBody" : "Groundings at sea can happen fast, but recovery demands experience, equipment, and collaboration. At a recent Maritime Forum breakfast seminar, participants from industry and research shared insights into the causes of groundings, emerging prevention tools, and how Norwegian offshore company BOA carried out a successful salvage of the grounded vessel NCL Salten near Trondheim in May. Hagbart Alsos from SINTEF Ocean opened the seminar with a data-driven overview of grounding incidents in Norwegian waters. According to statistics from the Norwegian Coastal Administration, 67% of groundings are caused by human error, with technical failures and environmental conditions making up the rest. The extent of the damage varies depending on seabed conditions, vessel type, and weather. To prevent future incidents, SINTEF is working on several forward-looking projects. A simulation tool developed with Kongsberg Digital and Equinor helps maritime operators assess damage and plan recovery using dynamic ballasting. SINTEF is also leading a Research Council–funded initiative on emergency towing, in collaboration with the Coast Guard and other partners, to reduce the risk of drifting vessels running aground. Anders Penna, BOA Offshore. Foto: Ellen Weidemann A complex operation—successfully executed One of the highlights of the seminar was a detailed walk-through of a real salvage operation. Anders Penna from BOA Offshore presented the recovery of NCL Salten, a cargo vessel that grounded near Byneset in May. The grounding was serious, and BOA’s Salvage Team was mobilized immediately. A commercial salvage contract was signed within 24 hours. The team had to deal with multiple risks, including the potential for landslides, damaged tanks, and the vessel’s stability. On May 25, BOA began offloading 1,300 tonnes of cargo to barges for transport to Orkanger Port. Two days later, during high tide, tugboats BOA Brage and BOA Balder successfully refloated the vessel. After confirming no oil spills or other environmental damage, the ship was cleared to sail to Orkanger. – Aside from hull damage, no harm was done to people, the environment, or cargo. By that standard, this was a successful operation, said Penna. Hagbart Alsos, SINTEF Ocean. Foto: Ellen Weidemann Relevance for the autonomous maritime sector For members of Ocean Autonomy Cluster, the seminar reinforced the need for integrated, technology-driven solutions to reduce risk and improve emergency response. Whether it’s through improved simulation, autonomous navigation support, or smarter vessel monitoring, the future of maritime safety will rely on proactive innovation and seamless collaboration across sectors.",

"articleBody" : "Les saken på norsk F&Z Solutions has developed a custom environmental DNA (eDNA) pump in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA). Together with the autonomous drone Pamela, the solution will now be used in multiple research projects in Norway and abroad. USV Pamela is a small and lightweight uncrewed surface vehicle (USV) developed by F&Z Solutions in Trondheim for environmental monitoring in lakes, rivers, and coastal waters. The platform enables the collection of high-resolution spatial data with great efficiency and minimal operational complexity. Andrea Faltynkova, F&Z Solutions. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset, Fremtidens Industri Pamela is already being used by NINA, which applies environmental DNA (eDNA) analysis to map biodiversity and monitor species of particular ecological and management interest. Living organisms constantly release traces of DNA into their surroundings—in the form of skin cells, hair, saliva, feces, and more. By collecting these traces, we can use DNA technology to determine which species are present in a given area, without needing to capture or observe them directly, explains Frode Fossøy, senior researcher at NINA. eDNA has proven to be both more cost-effective and, in many cases, more accurate than traditional field-based monitoring methods. Assembly of the Pamela drone at the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research – NINA. Photo: NINA Autonomous DNA sampling With the Pamela drone, NINA can now collect eDNA samples even more efficiently. The autonomous vehicle can cover large areas while simultaneously collecting plankton and filtering water using the newly developed pump from F&Z Solutions. “These samples give us a far more representative picture of biodiversity in a lake or a marine harbor,” says Fossøy. “In addition, the GPS-based autonomous navigation enables us to repeat the exact same transect later, which is essential when monitoring changes in biodiversity over time.” DNA analysis of the plankton samples reveals which crustaceans are present in the water column, while the filtered samples can detect everything from fish to aquatic insects. This year, Pamela will be used in several monitoring projects, including studies on how hydropower production affects biodiversity in regulated reservoirs. The hydropower industry has shown great interest in eDNA, and with Pamela and the new pump, we now have a powerful tool to support that kind of ecological mapping.” Senior researcher Frode Fossøy. Photo: NINA EU-funded pilot project – and support from Testination The new eDNA pump was developed in close collaboration between researchers at NINA and the team at F&Z Solutions. The pump is now part of a pilot series being deployed in the EU-funded research project PINKTrack, which aims to track the spread of invasive pink salmon in European waterways. Units are now being delivered to research partners in Sweden, Denmark, Germany, France, and Greenland. The production of this pilot series is co-funded by Testination, a shared platform that brings together test infrastructure in the Trøndelag region. Testination helps small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) develop and validate new technology by providing access to facilities and expertise that would otherwise be difficult to obtain. Testination is part of the Norwegian Katapult program, run through the DigiCat centre. It plays a key role in strengthening the maritime autonomy ecosystem in Norway. Key partners include NTNU, SINTEF, Maritime Robotics, OceanTech Innovation, Torghatten, and Boreal. “Our collaboration with F&Z Solutions has been extremely fruitful. They took the challenge head-on and developed a product we are very happy with,” says Fossøy. F&Z Solutions currently has the capacity to include 1–2 more projects in the pilot and welcomes inquiries from researchers with relevant field sampling campaigns. "articleBody" : "Les saken på norsk Trondheim-based ocean tech company Eelume is set to play a key role in one of the largest shipwreck exploration initiatives in Northern Europe. Through a newly signed 10-year contract with the Norwegian-Danish organization Epoke, Eelume’s underwater vehicles will be used to uncover historical secrets hidden on the seafloor. “This is a collaboration we’re truly proud of. Epoke has brought together an extraordinary international team of experts in marine archaeology, history, and ocean research. Together, we aim to uncover lost chapters of our shared maritime history,” says CEO Thomas Nygaard of Eelume. The project merges deep historical knowledge with advanced subsea technology. Epoke’s mission is to locate and document a wide range of shipwrecks and other submerged heritage sites across Northern European waters. Epoke: Uncovering history beneath the waves Epoke is a Norwegian-Danish nonprofit organization dedicated to marine archaeology and historical research. The organization consists of a highly interdisciplinary team with deep expertise in marine archaeology, history, and cultural heritage. Epoke leads large-scale expeditions to investigate and document submerged cultural treasures, working across sectors and borders to protect and share the stories hidden beneath the waves. Se also: Revolutionizing Seafloor Mapping: Eelume Redefines Subsea Exploration A mission recognized by The Explorers Club The shipwreck search is officially recognized as a Flag Expedition by The Explorers Club, one of the world’s most prestigious organizations dedicated to scientific exploration. Since 1918, the club’s iconic flag has been carried on fewer than 600 expeditions, each selected for its potential to advance the frontiers of human knowledge. Epoke and its partners have been entrusted with Flag 51, a symbol of global recognition and credibility. “Carrying the flag is not only a great honor, it’s a powerful reminder that this is more than just archaeology. It’s exploration in the truest sense of the word,” says Thomas Nygaard. Designed to go where others can’t Eelume’s autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) are purpose-built for operations in challenging and confined underwater environments. Their unique, snake-like design allows them to navigate tight spaces and stay close to the seabed—areas that are typically out of reach for conventional ROVs or vehicles. “This is where our All-Terrain AUV really comes into its own,” says Thomas Nygaard. “We’re able to explore complex topographies that other vehicles can’t access, and combine that reach with sensors used in completely new ways. This opens up new possibilities and makes the wreck-hunting process more effective and precise.” “This is more than a project—it’s a long-term mission with great historical and societal value. We look forward to contributing to new discoveries and insights about our maritime past,” adds Håkon Reinertsen in Epoke. Admiral Henrik Ryberg (DK), Linda Reinertsen and Håkon Reinertsen from Epoke.org and Danish freediver and world record holder Stig Severinsen. World record holder joins the mission One of the participants in the project is Danish freediver Stig Severinsen who is a four-time world champion in freediving and holds multiple Guinness World Records, including the longest breath-hold (22 minutes) and the longest swim under ice. He is also famous for swimming 202 meters underwater on a single breath, using a monofin. About Eelume Eelume is a Trondheim-based ocean technology company developing autonomous underwater vehicles that combine inspection, maintenance, and operational flexibility in a single platform. "articleBody" : "Les saken på norsk Ocean Autonomy Cluster and Testination leads a new ocean technology initiative to monitor the water quality at Havet, a popular city beach in Trondheim. The goal: safer swimming all year round. Ocean Autonomy Cluster and several partner companies are launching a new project that will provide real-time water quality monitoring at Nyhavna, Trondheim’s urban fjord area. Combining autonomous platforms and sensor technology, the project delivers up-to-date information directly to both swimmers and city authorities. — The fjord is part of the city. It should be safe to swim here, and we need to know when it’s not, says Frode Halvorsen, manager of Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Ocean Autonomy Cluster Real-time data means safer swimming Although the water quality at Havet is generally good, occasional sewer overflows have caused temporary contamination. To improve transparency and safety, the project deploys sensors that monitor bacteria levels, temperature, and visibility in the water. The data will be made available through a digital platform accessible to the public. — This may be a small step, but it’s an important one. It builds trust and provides safety, even when challenges arise, says Halvorsen. Pamela, an autonomous research drone developed by F&Z Solutions. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Ocean Autonomy Cluster Locally developed technology, locally applied Several cluster members are participating in the project, including Ocean Access, Kadabra, and F&Z Solutions, the latter being the developer of the autonomous research drone Pamela. — Monitoring water quality is crucial for both people and the environment, and we have the technology to make a difference, says Andrea Faltynkova of F&Z Solutions. — When you have tools in place for continuous measurements, it doesn’t just improve safety, it also increases our understanding of the issue, she adds. NTNU is contributing research expertise, and the Norwegian Institute for Nature Research (NINA) has also expressed interest. Morten Breivik, NTNU. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Ocean Autonomy Cluster — The goal is to achieve real-time measurements of the water quality throughout the inner harbor basin at Nyhavna. Today, sampling is done manually a couple of times a week. This would be a game-changer, says Morten Breivik, Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering Cybernetics at NTNU. Technology meets culture at the fjord Kim Aasli, Kristina Emilie Winther Jakobsen, and Erlend Mogård Larsen from Havet, together with Frode Halvorsen from Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Ocean Autonomy Cluster With more than 50,000 annual visitors, Havet has become a popular public swimming facility in Trondheim. The team behind the initiative welcomes the new collaboration. — It’s rewarding to see ocean technology applied to real-world challenges in the city. This collaboration shows how business, academia, and the local community can create value together. Swimming in the sea is no longer limited to the short summer season — people bathe year-round across Norway, says Erlend Mogård Larsen, founder of Havet. — We support full transparency and clear documentation that the water is safe, even during irregular events. This initiative helps us achieve that, adds Kim Aasli, general manager at Havet. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Ocean Autonomy Cluster Pilot project starts this summer The team aims to deploy the first set of sensors during a pilot phase this summer, in collaboration with Trondheim Municipality and NTNU. — Real-time water quality monitoring in the urban fjord basin would be a national first, says Breivik. — The fact that the tech environments at Nyhavna are joining forces with one of its main cultural venues is also quite unique. It shows the power of combining local culture and short-traveled technology, he adds. — This could serve as a model for urban fjord water monitoring across the country, says Halvorsen. "articleBody" : "Read article in Norwegian How do you succeed with exporting technology to demanding markets like the EU and the US? That was the main topic when FI Ocean Space Incubator and FI Næringshage hosted a dedicated export-themed event at HAVET in Trondheim, in collaboration with Deksa and Innovation Norway. The event gathered a range of technology companies with ambitions for international growth. Among the participants were companies such as Eelume, Clean Sea Solutions, Autoagri, F&Z Solutions, HH Environmental Solutions, Maritime Robotics, WaterLinked, Zeabuz, Optonor, and Poseidon. During four intensive hours, participants received a comprehensive introduction to topics ranging from free trade agreements and customs regulations to export control and the classification of so-called dual-use technologies. “For many early-stage and scaling companies, export can seem both risky and confusing. Our goal was to provide clarity, confidence, and practical tools before companies enter new markets,” said Vegard Saur, head of FI Ocean Space Incubator. Caspar Fabini, Innovation Norway. Fabini, an export advisor specializing in logistics, customs, VAT, free trade, and rules of origin, gave participants a detailed look into how international trade agreements and regulations affect market access and how tools such as the Mendel tariff database can help avoid common mistakes. Thorngren, a legal export advisor with expertise in international contracts and e-commerce, addressed the legal aspects of export. She emphasized the importance of sound contracts, risk management, and what companies should be especially mindful of when navigating foreign market requirements. Malin Thorngren, Innovation Norway. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Fremtidens Industri When technology requires special control After lunch, Håkon Sommerset of Deksa gave a presentation on compliance for the export of strategic technology. He explained how companies must relate to dual-use classifications and license requirements — and how security assessments can determine whether an export is legal or not. This topic sparked strong engagement, with many attendees saying this part of the program provided valuable new insights. From regulation to implementation The day concluded with a Q&A session and open discussion, where participants shared their own experiences and export-related challenges. Many highlighted a significantly improved understanding of Incoterms and VAT rules within the EU, and said they now feel better prepared for entering export markets. Håkon Sommerset, Deksa. Photo: Lars Bugge Aarset/Fremtidens Industri Wrapping up with After Sea After the formal program, the day continued with After Sea — a social networking session hosted by Ocean Autonomy Cluster. Participants were introduced to the cluster’s service offerings and current efforts to secure funding under the national cluster program. Experiences were also shared from companies that have taken part in XLRTR — a business development initiative focusing on dual-use technologies — along with a preview of the new cohort launching this autumn. The ESA BIC program was also highlighted, with input from companies receiving financial support and business development assistance through the scheme. The next application deadline is 1 September. Participants also got to meet the new director of Maritimt Forum, Ellen Weidemann, who presented the organization's strategic priorities going forward. The event concluded by welcoming new member companies to the network. “We hope this day has given our member companies both knowledge and confidence to take their products from our region to the world,” said Kine Kilen, manager of FI Næringshage.
