"articleBody" : "Jan De Nul Group has ordered cluster member Maritime Robotic’s well-proven and hybrid Mariner Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) as the first step towards unmanned and autonomous offshore survey operations. Named Beluga 01, the vessel will sail under the Luxembourg flag and be deployed for worldwide hydrographical and environmental surveys on marine and offshore construction projects. Jan De Nul is herewith the first dredging contractor to deploy an unmanned survey vehicle in marine and offshore conditions. The Beluga 01 is based on the innovative Maritime Robotics’ Mariner class USV, which for years has proven its mobility and seaworthiness for data acquisition under rough conditions. Maritime Robotics’ system convinced Jan De Nul of its well-engineered high-quality design, based on 10 years of experience. It is a user-friendly, cost-effective and low-risk platform for data acquisition at sea as an alternative or adjunct to larger manned vessels. Rendering of Jan De Nul’s Beluga 01 Mariner class USV from Maritime Robotics. Illustration: Jan De Nul Group By choosing unmanned surveys and by opting for the Mariner class USV, Jan De Nul fully commits to improved safety and operational control during its survey activities, reduced carbon emissions, and more efficient data acquisition. – We are very proud to have been selected as supplier for Jan De Nul Group. We stand for in-house developed systems, with sustainability and autonomy in mind, in close collaboration with civilian, governmental and military partners. We look forward to collaborating with Jan De Nul on the further development of the Beluga 01. Together, we will explore the future of unmanned solutions to ensure safer, greener and more cost-effective data acquisitions at sea, says Eirik Hovstein, COO of Maritime Robotics. – For several years, we have been studying different autonomous systems. Our primary focus has always been to build up our expertise on autonomy for maritime survey operations. The global circumstances in 2020 and a maturing USV market enabled us to take it to the next step and order a turnkey vessel for our marine and offshore projects. We found the perfect partner in Maritime Robotics, a leading provider of innovative unmanned solutions for maritime operations and data acquisition, says Mike Lycke, Survey Manager Offshore Projects at Jan De Nul Group. Rendering of Jan De Nul’s Beluga 01 Mariner class USV from Maritime Robotics. Illustration: Jan De Nul Group Reduced carbon footprint The Beluga 01 is equipped with a fully redundant hybrid propulsion system. The prime source of propulsion is a diesel engine that is mechanically coupled to the water jet. Alternatively, the vessel can be operated in full electrical mode. The additional electrical Torqeedo propulsion, installed parallel to the main propulsion, can manoeuvre the vessel in sensitive marine areas. There is also a range extender module to top up the batteries which will operate longer than 12 hours. This system has lower emissions than the main engine, which could also be used as an alternator for the batteries. Furthermore, the electrical propulsion acts as redundancy for the main engine in case of a failure, or vice versa. Jan De Nul is committed to cutting carbon emissions. Zero-emission propulsion on future vessels is part of the Group’s strategy. When designing vessels for instance, Jan De Nul takes into account the environmental impact and tackles environmental challenges by focusing on reducing the footprint of its activities, particularly on water and air quality and on the climate. Proven record in harsh offshore conditions The Beluga 01 is capable of operating in up to sea state five, although this usually precludes gathering any useful survey data. The vessel can survive in up to sea state seven. The Beluga 01 only needs 80 cm of water to operate in. "articleBody" : "We propose establishing areas of importance to innovation and development of technology, where new technology can be verified and calibrated against ruling standards. Ocean autonomy is a relatively new field, and Norway is at the forefront of its technology development. Therefore, the relationship between regulatory frameworks and technological developments must be close to ensure that Norway maintains its position in the field. The Norwegian Directorate of Maritime Affairs’ approach to the development of autonomous ships and changes in laws and regulations is an excellent example to follow. In late 2021, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense sent out a consultation note on data acquisition and information related to seabed mapping. To ensure a working framework for seabed mapping, we have submitted these proposals: 0-30 meters depth We agree with the proposed declassification of data down to 30 meters. At the same time, we hope that the system and process related to the duty to report will be so simple and flexible that it will not be an obstacle. 30+ meters depth We have a great understanding that particular sea and coastal areas must be subject to restrictions concerning national security, among other things. Nevertheless, the proposed classifications and limitations will present a significant obstacle to research and development. At the same time, it criminalizes many actors, partly due to the quality of technical equipment. Highly detailed seabed mapping is of great importance to many civilian operations, e.g., construction, environmental mapping related to city developments, establishment and operation of aquaculture installations, etc. At a general level, there is also a broad understanding that better knowledge of the sea is crucial for economic development and for securing the environment and climate. Technology and opportunities today Today’s technology is of such high quality and detail that even using «consumer equipment» will exceed the restrictions on depth and resolution described in the consultation note. Echosounder: As mentioned in the consultation note and several of the responses, today’s echo sounders and sonars, both single beam and multi-beam, are of such a quality that they will cross the limits of 25×25 meter resolution deeper than 30 meters. The consequences are that both recreational boats and the fishing fleet will be criminalized. ROV and video images: «Simple video images of the seabed will as a general rule still not be used to reconstruct the bottom topography, and will therefore not be covered by the restrictions…». With today’s equipment, it will be easy to use video or still images from ROVs or other underwater equipment to reconstruct the bottom topography up to a very high degree of detail using, for example, photogrammetry. Easily accessible hobby equipment and free software can achieve this. Autonomous ships: Depth data is essential for the further development of autonomous ships, e.g., as part of the redundancy of the navigation system. “Developers of autonomous technology and automated solutions must, in any case, be aware of the ban on the development of such technology” (p. 11 in the consultation note). The proposal as it stands now will thus be an obstacle to the further development of Norwegian ocean technology and its use in Norway’s waters. Not only for autonomous ships but also with improving navigation systems and situational awareness in general. Limiting maritime innovation and development opportunities in such a way would be very unfortunate for technology developers and research, innovation actors, and end-users. In addition, Norwegian actors will have a much more limited framework than others. This will consequentially result in Norway losing its leading position. Our proposal We believe it to be more appropriate to apply limits on selected areas, such as areas of particular importance to the nation’s security. This will also simplify both management and enforcement of the regulations by establishing smaller and clearly defined areas. The chance that recreational boats unknowingly break the law by using available equipment, such as echo sounders and other navigation and communication equipment, will be significantly reduced. If this is not feasible, areas specifically used for research and development should be opened up. For example, Trondheimsfjorden is an area that is used extensively for research and development activities. Trondheimsfjorden was even regulated as a test site for autonomous ships back in 2016. Whole or large parts of Trondheimsfjorden should be declassified to ensure good research and development conditions and avoid criminalizing activities that contribute to new knowledge and technology. Cross-party initiatives are working for increased investment in ocean space for economic growth and the implementation of the green shift. Thus, it is a crossroads that this proposal blocks the same initiatives by limiting the generation of new knowledge about the very same ocean space. The consequences of this will be many; as previously mentioned, we as a nation will soon be left behind. We will reduce our competitiveness in research and development and weaken our knowledge base on sustainable sea management. Instead of limiting access and data acquisition, we need to make the data that can be shared readily available. Therefore, we propose establishing areas of importance to innovation and development of technology, where new technology can be verified and calibrated against ruling standards. Establishing such sites will also ensure better data quality “crowdsourced” from units installed on recreational and commercial vessels. Think about the innovation and rapid development made possible when land map data became available. Given the lack of current ocean space data, it is natural to believe that the potential is tremendous by making it available.",

"articleBody" : "The Royal Navy has recently started trials with the Otter USV, with impressive results. Uncrewed and autonomous vessels have begun proving themselves as being superior in many operations at sea. Although water covers about 71% of the earth’s surface, only a few per cent of the global ocean has been sufficiently mapped to provide detailed information about the seabed. However, a new era for cost-effective ocean survey operations is emerging. The shift is made possible by uncrewed and autonomous vessels that can cover far more significant areas in a fraction of the time compared to traditional methods. More data, less work – Uncrewed surface vessels (USV) are optimized for specific operations and applications. A single USV can, in most operations, replace larger crewed vessels. They are also far easier to transport and operate, says Kristoffer Fortun, Chief Sales Officer at the Norway-based systems provider Maritime Robotics. In other words, survey operations are both less time-consuming and more cost-effective when using USV’s. Autonomous systems also increase the range and quality of data acquisition. – Otter USV is a quickly deployable turn-key system proven for seabed mapping and monitoring sheltered waters. The robust catamaran design and the flexibility of integrating a wide range of sensors make the system an ideal solution for surveys in sheltered waters such as lakes, rivers, canals, harbours, and other inland waterways, says Fortun. Credit: Maritime Robotics Superior results The Royal Navy is one of Maritime Robotics’ latest customers. They needed an uncrewed vessel for mapping, imaging, and situational awareness data gathering. In collaboration with the British ocean technology distributor RS Aqua, Maritime Robotics’ expertise in uncrewed surface vessels proved to be the ideal choice for the Royal Navy. – Although the Otter Pro is being operated to enable Project Hecla to refine future operating concepts of uncrewed surface vehicles in future military surveying applications, it has begun to prove itself as being superior to existing portable systems, says Commander Graham Mimpriss, Royal Navy lead for the trials, in a statement released by the Royal Navy. Project Hecla was established to optimize the Navy’s ability to collect and exploit hydrographic and oceanographic information using autonomous solutions, among others. Credit: Maritime Robotics When time matters – Using a rapid response context, the Otter was mobilized within an hour of arrival after being transported to the site in a van, says Commander Mimpriss. On its first outing, the team surveyed Horsea Lake (7,000 square meters) in 40 minutes and then generated a viable product within an hour. This was achieved with a team of three without the need for a boat or jetty facilities for launching or recovery, according to the statement. – Our existing platforms would be hard-pressed to match this performance in a rapid response scenario, says Commander Mimpriss. Rough and flexible systems – We’re of course very glad to have secured this contract with The Royal Navy, together with our partner RS Aqua. Our products are often chosen when the customer’s requirements are high, and the conditions tough. This order was no exception, and we’re extremely happy that the Otter Pro are living up to their expectations, says Fortun. The Otter USV was fitted with additional hydrographic and bathymetric sensors for this specific project, including a Norbit multibeam sonar, embedded GNSS/Inertial INS (Applanix Surfmaster), and Ping DSP side-scan sonar. The vehicle was also outfitted with an Autocast sound velocity profiling (SVP) winch system, making it a complete solution for hydrographic and bathymetric surveying.",

"articleBody" : "Ocean Power Parks was founded by Nader Hassavari in 2009 with the objective to develop, market, and distribute a clean and autonomous ocean electricity solution. The Ocean Power Parks (OPP) concept is based on parks with multipurpose marine construction for the large production of renewable energy and mariculture at sea. The systems are unmanned and will operate by automation. OPPs solution consists of concrete, steel, pontoons, and generators. It is movable and can demount and mount in different ocean environments. In low-production periods, the system will be able to produce hydrogen which will be stored and then transported to land. – The future of renewable energy will take place in the ocean. Our mission is to replace the oil and gas industry with renewable energy and sustainable food production, to ensure the continuation of life on our planet, says founder and CEO Nader Hassavari. Significant capital has been invested into the development of OPPs technology, and they are currently further researching and testing the equipment’s feasibility for ongoing improvements. They have worked directly with FEDEM Technology (SAP Germany) to perform hydrodynamic and structural analysis of its floating wave power generator concept. – Through our membership in the Ocean Autonomy Cluster, we have become closer to potential collaborators, partners and investors with strong knowledge of autonomous technologies for ocean applications. Our contributions to the cluster community are diversification and increased knowledge of renewable energy and aquaculture, among others, says Hassavari. Welcome to the cluster!",

"articleBody" : "We welcome Aviant to the Ocean Autonomy Cluster! Aviant is an innovative drone service company that focuses on autonomous transportation with drones. Transportation with drones has proven to be very valuable within the blue sector, with projects such as Wilhelmsens transport of spare parts to ships in Singapore, and Equinors drone transportation to oil rigs in Stavanger. Aviants ambition is to do similar projects with their technology. – We got the idea of joining the Ocean Autonomy Cluster after talking with Frode Halvorsen (Cluster Manager). He introduced us to the cluster, and we believe there are synergies between our company and the other members, says Lars Erik Fagernæs, Aviant CEO. – We can contribute on all drone related topics in the cluster. More specifically, we would be very interested in looking at partnerships where we provide autonomous transportation with drones, says Fagernæs. Herman Øie Kolden (right) and Bernhard Paus Græsdal (left) presenting the Aviant drone after the 120 km flight between Røros and Trondheim. The drone is manufactured by Vertical Technologies. It can handle a payload of up to 1.2 kg and has a range of 150 km. Photo: Martin Svalesen / Aviant First long-range medical flight In February 2021, Aviant completed their very first long-range medical flight. Flying drones in Norway is no trivial task. The weather is harsh, the topography is complex, and the distances are large. If you want to fly in Norway, you need to handle all these challenges. That is why Aviant set out on the technically challenging task of flying from the hospital in the mountainous village of Røros, to St. Olavs hospital in the regional capital of Trondheim. Røros is famous for breaking records for the lowest temperatures in Norway. To reach Trondheim, they would have to pass tall mountains and deep valleys. After months of planning and several hundred kilometers of flight testing, the first flight from Røros to Trondheim was finally completed in February 2021- in one of the coldest months of the year! The flight is the first of its kind, and it proves that long-range medical transportation is possible, even in a northern climate. Be sure to read more about the ambitious Aviant team on their website. Welcome to the cluster, Aviant!",

"articleBody" : "Test site: In 2016, Trondheimsfjorden became the world’s first full-scale test site for autonomous ships. The TestinationTRD joint initiative will facilitate reduced costs, logistics, and time spent on test and demo of new technologies and ocean autonomy – for both national and international actors. Photo: Marius Tvinnereim / Ocean Autonomy Cluster TestinationTRD will be a one-stop shop for testing, demonstration, and verification of ocean space technologies. The initiative is being developed by Trondheim Municipality in partnership with the Ocean Autonomy Cluster and the innovation company Fremtidens Industri. The TestinationTRD initiative is set to combine and make available all the expertise, infrastructure, and test equipment that exists in Trondheim, Norway, facilitating reduced costs, logistics, and time spent on test and demo of new technologies and ocean autonomy. TestinationTRD will serve both international and national actors working with developing and verifying ocean technologies. Trondheim has been the hotbed of many groundbreaking technologies and innovations, and Trondheim’s ocean autonomy environment is regarded as the world’s leading hub of researchers, developers, and expertise. In 2016, Trondheimsfjorden became the world’s first full-scale test arena for autonomous vessels. Pioneering companies such as Zeabuz, Blueye Robotics, and Eelume are also attracting international attention with their autonomous ocean space solutions. TestinationTRD will therefore be carried out in collaboration with a large number of companies and R&D institutions that already have activities, equipment, and infrastructure connected to the test site in Trondheimsfjorden.

"articleBody" : "– By working with other clusters, we can connect different expertise and technology to collaborate to create comprehensive solutions for detection, collection, and disposal of marine pollution or organic threats. This gives us increased technology-development opportunities and strengthened implementation ability compared to what individual companies can do individually. Right now, a kelp project in the Atlantic Ocean is very relevant, as the boom is increasing in frequency and scope, and threatens existing ecosystems, fisheries, and tourism. – If we can design a good and sustainable total solution, this will be interesting for all regions where these industries are responsible for much of the value creation, says Eirik Langeland, head of NOSCA Clean Oceans. Extensive damage In this context, it is about the “Great Atlantic Sargassum Belt” which occurs on the west coast of Africa and flows in huge numbers in the direction of the Caribbean. These mats with kelp and seagrass have the sizes of a football field. They destroy the existing ecosystem and cause major problems, including fishing and tourism with dirty beaches and foul-smelling gas. Leaders in Central America and the Caribbean have now promised to take action to deal with the damaging effects that greatly affect the economy in this part of the world. – Sargassum is on the agenda for both clusters, but with a different focus. By using the combined expertise, we can tackle a challenge that creates headaches for several countries, says chairman of the board of Ocean Autonomy Cluster, Eirik Evjen Hovstein. He is also the COO and one of the founders of Maritime Robotics, which has membership in both clusters. The company started 15 years ago with two or three employees. Today, the number is close to 40, and in addition, there is a corresponding number employed by partners, not least in the immediate area around the industrial and production environment in Vanvikan in Indre Fosen. Dull, dirty and dangerous – Our philosophy is to cooperate where we can and compete when we must. In the Atlantic, we are facing a gigantic task that is well suited for a cluster-to-cluster collaboration, which can double the impact and show the way to completely new markets, says Hovstein. He reminds us that all that has to do with pollution in the sea is a business that requires great accuracy and boundless patience: – It is “dull, dirty and dangerous” – and therefore perfect for autonomous vessels. The work is tedious, but autonomous vessels never get bored. There are also often dirty and risky assignments, with a lot of pollution and perhaps the danger of explosion. There may also even be a risk of piracy in certain waters along the coast of African. Another factor is the cost of using research vessels and other conventional solutions. Autonomous vessels, ranging from drones and balloons to unmanned aerial vehicles and satellites, can provide far cheaper and more sustainable processes. Close to NTNU – Ocean Autonomy Cluster works for value creation and export, and we want to profile the region of Trøndelag, and Norway, as “the world’s best” in autonomy in connection with the sea, says Hovstein. He refers to Trondheim as the «technology capital», where NTNU and SINTEF focused early on autonomy. They should have much of the credit for connecting many small and medium-sized technology companies in the region. – For example, NTNU is very vigilant and often includes new technology in research. It provides good opportunities to test ideas and equipment that are under development. Seeking help Eirik Langeland from NOSCA Clean Oceans also emphasizes the need for an open culture between clusters. – We do not always have all the necessary knowledge and technology among our own members. Then we have to look to other innovation clusters to see who can help us, as is the case with the sargassum problem. He emphasizes that NOSCA’s members are good at detection that can be used to calculate driveways, establish barriers and do the collection, by technology transfer from the oil and gas industry. – For us, logistics and disposal are challenges. How to handle seagrass, prevent it from rotting during transport and find out what it can be used for. Ocean Autonomy Cluster can help us with this. Many possibilities – The cluster collaboration is currently under development. We are now gathering facts and exchanging ideas, with the hope of a more formalized collaboration during the summer, says Eirik Hovstein, who points out that this can be extended to other fields than sargassum. – The amount of maritime littering is increasing, and in Norway, there are several companies with extensive expertise in this area. Many of them are small, and there is a need for interaction to create products and package solutions that can reach out to the big world. If we develop new solutions this can open up even more opportunities, for example by recycling the waste and making resources out of it. Read more about our new partner NOSCA Clean Oceans here!",
